Why do older people tend to get sick more easily than their younger counterparts? Finding an answer to that question is the goal of a new joint project that will support many research positions and RN jobs Arizona.
The University of Arizona Department of Immunobiology and the Arizona Center on Aging were recently awarded an $11.8 million contract from the National Institutes of Health to study the aging population’s declining immunity.
The overall goal of the five-year “Protective Immunity in Special Populations” study is to understand why elderly people are often more susceptible to certain health problems and pinpoint what can be done to change that.

A large number of Arizona nursing jobs (Click here) could be in danger if the state eliminates its local Medicaid program.
Last month, the Arizona Senate Appropriations Committee voted in favor of a bill that would effectively get rid of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, a move that would result in the loss of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars for the local economy.
AHCCCS, which basically serves as the state’s Medicaid agency, is responsible for providing healthcare services to residents that meet certain income and other requirements. The program is being targeted for elimination because of Arizona’s budget troubles, including a lack of state and federal funding for the program.

Thousands of grocery store jobs (Click here) could be created if state legislators pass a law allowing wine to be sold in stores.
The Tennessee General Assembly is currently considering whether or not to allow wine sales in grocery stores, marking the fifth consecutive year that such a law has been proposed. An economic impact study from the Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association found that law could create more than 3,000 jobs.
Depending on how the law is adopted, anywhere from 1,597 to 3,513 jobs could be created. At the same time, the state’s wine industry would grow by 25 to 55 percent, and the tax and license fees paid by local and state governments would pump $19 million to $38 million into the local economy.

Several Texas sales jobs will be axed as one of the most successful online retailers closes its local distribution center.
Amazon.com is planning to close a distribution center located in a suburb of Dallas, a move that will result in the loss of 119 sales jobs (Click here). The state has criticized the online retail company for owing millions of dollars in state sales tax, while Amazon has criticized Texas for having unfavorable regulatory policies.
Last year Comptroller Susan Combs sent Amazon a bill for $269 million. The company owes the state that money - which includes taxes, penalties, and interest from 2005 to 2009 - after failing to collect taxes on online sales made in Texas.

A company that manufactures construction equipment could create many new San Antonio employment opportunities if it locates a new plant in the city.
AmeriQuip Eagle LLC recently announced that it is considering San Antonio as one of six potential locations for a new manufacturing plant. The company is planning to create many new jobs as it moves from its current location in Kentucky.
The new manufacturing plant would create about 100 new jobs, including 25 to 30 positions for highly-skilled workers. In fact, AmeriQuip has already begun hiring engineers in an effort to get ready for the the new facility.

A growing electronics company is increasing the number of technology sales jobs Phoenix (Click here) has to offer.
Decatur Electronics Inc. is planning to move the company’s main manufacturing facility from Decatur, Ill., to Phoenix, Ariz. during the next 90 days. Founded in 1955, Decatur is one of the oldest public safety product manufacturers in the nation.
The company will move into a 50,000-square-foot facility next to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The new facility will allow Decatur to improve supply, manufacturing, and distribution efficiency; prepare for future growth; and better deal with increasing international demand.

More medical jobs in Denver were added on a yearly basis at the end of last year than jobs in any other industry.
During December, the unemployment rate in Colorado took a slight jump, from 8.6 percent to 8.8 percent. That rate is still lower than the national average of 9.4 percent. The Denver area had an unemployment rate of 8.7 percent during November.
The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area employed roughly 1,195,800 people during December, which is just up from 1,195,700 people during November and a .7 percent increase from the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
