Texas Sales Jobs Lost in Amazon Tax Battle
Monday, February 14th, 2011Several Texas sales jobs will be axed as one of the most successful online retailers closes its local distribution center.
Amazon.com is planning to close a distribution center located in a suburb of Dallas, a move that will result in the loss of 119 sales jobs (Click here). The state has criticized the online retail company for owing millions of dollars in state sales tax, while Amazon has criticized Texas for having unfavorable regulatory policies.
Last year Comptroller Susan Combs sent Amazon a bill for $269 million. The company owes the state that money - which includes taxes, penalties, and interest from 2005 to 2009 - after failing to collect taxes on online sales made in Texas.
