Ford to Cut Almost 800 Chicago Jobs

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

While many American car companies are having trouble, Ford Motor Company is planning to cut 792 Chicago jobs at its Southeast Side assembly plant.

The cuts are a result of the company dropping to only one working shift by November 3. Ford had previously said 600 jobs would be cut when it dropped to one shift, according to an article by Southtown Star. The plant in Chicago is Ford’s oldest, and has 2,174 hourly and 137 salaried employees.

The company has been cutting back production at assembly plants throughout the country as it adjusts to a slowing demand for its cars and trucks. Last week, Ford said September new-vehicle sales were down 34.6 percent compared to the same month last year. The plant builds the Ford Taurus, the Ford Taurus X, the Mercury Sable and the Lincoln MKS.

Why Applicant Tracking is Valuable

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Online recruiting tools, specifically applicant tracking systems, have become very popular as of late as they often reduce a company’s cost and time spent when hiring employees.

Applicant tracking systems are software developed to help companies recruit employees more efficiently, according to an article by eZine Articles. ATS can often be used to post job openings on corporate Web sites, job boards, create screen resumes and e-mail interview requests. About 50 percent of mid-sized companies and nearly all large companies use some form of ATS.

“The explosion in recent years of online job boards, company career sites, and email has opened up a surplus of new, cost-effective channels for recruiters to reach talented professionals,” the article notes. “The successful recruiter will take advantage of the electronic organization tools available today to maximize their recruiting efficiencies. This can mean quickly reducing thousands of resumes down to the top 10 qualified resumes that best match the criteria.”

So how can a company implement recruiting software into its everyday human resources practices? According to an HR Management article, the first step is to figure out who you want working for your company.

“All too often, companies set out on an executive search without even realizing what they’re looking for,” the article states. “Don’t make this mistake. Outline a list of metrics that pinpoint the skills and qualifications needed, and match those up to applicants recruited. Software that is specialized in the recruitment process is ideal for helping you to effectively identify the ideal job candidate.”
