Friday, February 26th, 2010

Pittsburgh construction jobs will be supported by the efforts of a local university.

The University of Pittsburgh’s property and facilities committee recently approved $46 million worth of construction and renovation projects. Of that funding, $28.2 million will go to expand the school’s physics and astronomy laboratory, $15 of which will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Austin Construction Jobs Created by Two Projects

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A winning bid by one company for two local contracts will help to create several Austin construction jobs.

The Austin City Council recently awarded two construction contracts worth $12.7 million to Chasco Constructors. This is welcome news to local construction workers and the company, as civil projects are highly coveted in the current economy, mainly because of a lack of commercial and residential construction projects.

According to an article by the Austin Business Journal, the company made the lowest bid, of $6.4 million, to add more overnight parking space for jets at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. That project will require 1,100 truckloads of concrete to pour 10,000 cubic yards. The project, which is expected to begin during spring 2010, will create about 30 jobs and last about a year.

Tampa Construction Jobs See Biggest Yearly Decline

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Despite the fact that the city’s unemployment rate slightly declined, the Tampa Bay area saw a decrease in monthly and yearly employment during October, and Tampa construction jobs accounted for the majority of that drop.

During October, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 11.8 percent to 11.7 percent, following an increase from 11.4 percent during September. That increase places the area’s current rate above the national unemployment rate of 10.2 percent.

The area had a total non-farm employment of 1,157,200 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,158,000 workers during September and a 4.8 percent decrease from last year.
