Atlanta Jobs Declined by 77,000 Over Decade

The number of jobs Atlanta lost during the last decade places the city among the majority of markets that experienced employment declines.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Atlanta was among 53 markets that lost private-sector jobs during the last decade. The city lost a total of 77,000 jobs between May 2000 and May 2010, placing it 91st among the top 100 metro areas.

During May 2000, Atlanta had a workforce of 2,012,800 employees, but after hitting a high of 2,129,000 jobs during May 2007, the city went on to strike a low employment of 1,935,300 workers during May of this year. However, that was not even close to the worst employment decline in the nation.

Atlanta Education Jobs Supported by Stimulus

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has created or retained thousands of Atlanta education jobs and nearly 10,000 education-related positions throughout the State of Georgia.

The state recently released a report detailing exactly how it has spent the federal stimulus funding it received. During Q1 of the ARRA, Georgia spent $701,567,169 and created or preserved a total of 23,879 jobs. The state has been awarded a total of $3,281,223,879.

At the beginning of the year, the White House predicted that stimulus spending would create a total of 3.6 million jobs throughout the country, with 106,000 of those jobs being created in Georgia. During September, it was estimated that so far about 1 million jobs had been created or preserved.
