Oncologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating patients with cancer. These doctors play an important role in the medical industry and can work in a variety of areas to help patients with all types of cancer.

In order to become an oncologist, you have to complete medical school, pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam, and participate in a residency program or fellowship. You can then become certified by the American Board of Medical Specialists.

Depending on your education and experience, you can then choose to work in one of the following fields, according to Education-Portal.com:

• Medical oncology - Diagnose and treat various types of cancer in patients.
• Radiation oncology - Treat cancer patients and other patients suffering from non-cancerous conditions with radiation technology.
• Surgical oncology - Operate on patients to remove cancerous tumors and growths.
• Head and neck oncology - Diagnose and treat cancers found in the head and neck, such as those in the larynx, pharynx, thyroid, and salivary glands.
