Intel Capital recently announced its plans to set up a $300 million Ultrabook Fund, which will be given out to companies over the next three to four years, with the ultimate goal of creating an innovative system for this growing type of technology.
Ultrabook systems will combine the performance and capabilities of older laptop technology with newer tablet features. The technology will offer a highly responsive and secure experience in a thin sleek design at an affordable price.
Intel will invest in companies that are building hardware and software technologies meant to enhance the way people interact with Ultrabooks, including longer battery life that allows for all-day usage, innovative physical designs, and improved storage capacity.
“Ultrabook devices are poised to be an important area for innovation in the $261 billion global computer industry,” Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and executive vice president for Intel, said in a statement. “The Intel Capital Ultrabook fund will focus on investing in companies building technologies that will help revolutionize the computing experience and morph today’s mobile computers into the next ‘must have’ device.”
Intel will invest in new Ultrabook technology in three phases:
- Phase I - The company will release the 2nd Generation Intel Core processors later this year, which will allow for the production of thin, light designs less than one inch thick at an affordable price.
- Phase II - Intel will release the next-generation processor - dubbed “Ivy Bridge” - during the first half of 2010, which will allow for laptops with more efficient power, better visual performance, increased responsiveness, and enhanced security.
- Phase III - In 2013, Intel will release its new line of Ultrabook-powered technology - known as “Haswell” - which will reduce power consumption by 50 percent.
Intel Capital has several other funds aimed at driving innovations in specific geographical and technological areas, including: India Technology Fund, China Technology Fund II, Brazil Technology Fund, Middle East and Turkey Fund, Intel Digital Home Fund, and Intel Communications Fund.
