Dallas sales jobs are strongly benefiting from the holiday shopping season.

The National Retail Federation is now predicting that holiday spending will increase by 3.3 percent when compared to last year, up from the organization’s original forecast of 2.3 percent. Several factors - including stock market stability, income growth, and increased savings - account for the adjustment.

During November, retail industry sales throughout the nation increased by .8 percent when compared to October and 6.8 percent when compared to 2009. The U.S. Department of Commerce found that retail sales increased by .8 percent when compared to October and 9.2 percent when compared to last year.

The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy has received a $1.7 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The funding will be used to study the effects of all-Trans Retinoic Acid on organ damage caused when oxygen is introduced to cells.

Professor Serrine Lau was granted the funding after she led a team that discovered ATRA protects against cell damage caused by oxidative stress, a condition that occurs after ischemia, or reduction of blood supply to an organ.

Several Houston government jobs are being saved through an alternative plan.

The city is offering its employees a voluntary furlough plan during December. The Houston Organization of Public Employees, a union that represents city workers, encouraged Mayor Annise Parker to enact the plan in an effort to bridge Houston’s current budget gap.

Under the new plan, city employees are able to take up to 10 voluntary or involuntary furlough days per year, which is higher than the initial five-day limit set by the Board of Directors of the Houston Municipal Employees Pension System.

One of the top creators of jobs in Tempe AZ was recently recognized.

The Phoenix Business Journal recently named LifeLock 29th on its list of the Best Places to Work in the Valley for large-sized companies. The company, which has significantly increased the number of IT jobs Phoenix has to offer, currently employs about 450 workers.

LifeLock first began offering identity theft protection services in 2005. At that time, the Tempe-based company only employed three people. However, LifeLock experienced tremendous employment growth - a total increase of 1,900 percent - between 2007 and 2009.

Many students will be able to prepare for San Antonio nurse jobs and other healthcare positions thanks to millions of dollars worth of new grants and scholarships.

The Baptist Health Foundation recently announced that it will award a total of 76 grants worth $4.8 million to health and social service organizations throughout the San Antonio area. Of that funding, $924,790 will be awarded to 809 students in the form of nursing and health careers scholarships.

“These scholarships are really neat because that’s a real investment in the future,” Kenneth Andrews, chairman of the Baptist Health Foundation board, told the San Antonio Express-News. “The stories you hear from some of these students, the sacrifices they have to make, is really overwhelming. A lot of these are older students going back to school. They’ve got families and jobs. That’s been tremendously rewarding for me.”
