Hundreds of Broward County Jobs Coming
Local companies are planning to create hundreds of Broward County jobs during the next few years.
The Broward Alliance recently announced that more than 800 new jobs will be coming to the Greater Ft. Lauderdale area during the next three years. This is great news for the local economy, which has continued to suffer from the lasting effects of the economic downturn.
During August, the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach area’s unemployment rate increased from 10.5 percent to 10.7 percent, which was much higher than the national average at the time of 9.6 percent.
The Ft. Lauderdale area had a total non-farm employment of 693,500 workers during August, which is up from 691,100 workers during July but a 1.3 percent decrease from last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to an article by the Orlando Sentinel, three companies will be responsible for the majority of job growth in the local area during the coming years, including:
- BRS Aerospace - This company, which produces emergency parachutes for planes, is planning to create 400 jobs and invest $500,000 in Pompano Beach.
- Kaplan University - This educational institution plans to add 300 jobs and invest $4.7 million at its operations in Plantation.
- MAKO Surgical - This company, which develops and markets orthopedic devices, is planning to create 90 jobs and invest $1.9 million in the Town of Davie.
During the past year, the Broward Alliance has provided funding for local companies to train workers, which has helped to keep nearly 1,000 jobs in the Broward area. During 2009, the organization agreed to help companies planning to create more than 1,000 jobs and retain about 450 jobs.
Other companies that received funding from the Alliance include: AAJ Technologies; Advanced Processing and Imaging, Blackbox GPS, CPN/Denelex Group, Florida Supplement LLC, GMMI Inc., MAPEI Corporation, Synergystix, and Thermal Concepts Inc.
