Austin Jobs Supported by Texas Energy Industry

The local energy industry continues to support Austin jobs and positions throughout Texas.

Many local leaders recently attended the Southeast Texas Plant Managers’ Forum to discuss the economy of Texas and how the state’s petrochemical industry plays an important role in fueling the rest of the nation.

The energy industry throughout Texas currently supplies about 20 percent of oil production throughout the nation, which is more than 30 percent of the country’s natural gas production, one-quarter of America’s refining capacity, and almost 60 percent of the nation’s chemical manufacturing.

One of the most important factors about the state’s energy industry is that it also helps keep local workers employed. The industry employs between 200,000 and 300,000 local residents and creates about $35 billion in total wages for the state.

“This industry creates jobs and generates products and services that have helped our economy lead the nation,” Gov. Rick Perry said. “We will continue to create the economic climate in Texas where these businesses can not only survive, but thrive. We will also continue to fight an increasingly activist EPA that threatens industries like this one to ensure they can continue driving Texas’ economic engine.”

The Southeast Texas Plant Managers Forum represents companies that employ a total of 20,000 people in the petrochemical industry and create an annual payroll of $1 billion throughout Southeast Texas. Plant managers from these companies meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues relevant to the local industry.

As a whole, these companies refine 60 percent of the nation’s aircraft fuel, 11 percent of the country’s natural gas, and almost 40 percent of America’s liquid natural gas.
