The Colorado Division of Insurance recently announced that it will receive a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the federal Affordable Care Act, which is meant to provide states with $250 million in Health Insurance Premium Review Grants over a five-year period.

Colorado will use the funding to improve the oversight of health insurance premium increases, take action against insurers who make unreasonable rate hikes, and ensure that consumers receive fair value for the money they pay into premiums.

If consumers are protected against outrageous insurance premiums, then they will be more likely to visit nurses and doctors, which means the healthcare industry will be able to continue the booming growth it has experienced throughout the economic recession.

“We did not wait to protect Coloradans, and along with our partners in the legislature, have consistently been ahead of the game,” Gov. Bill Ritter said. “This grant will provide Colorado with additional tools to review rates and educate consumers about health insurance.”

HHS awarded a total of $46 million to 45 states and the District of Columbia. The funding will help to improve the way the states review health insurance premium increases and hold insurance companies accountable for unjustified increases.

“This grant is a good firs” step to enhance how the Division of Insurance reviews rates and will help us make information on premium rates more understandable to consumers,” Colorado Insurance Commissioner Marcy Morrison said. “Our focus is, and will continue to be, about protecting consumers.”
