The main goal of a health educator is to promote individual and community health by educating people about behaviors that can prevent certain health problems. This is usually done by planning and implementing health programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Most employers require applicants for this job to have a bachelor’s degree from a health education program. Employees also can choose to become a Certified Health Educator Specialist by passing an examination from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.

There were about 66,200 health educators throughout the United States during 2008, and of those about 51 percent worked in healthcare and social assistance, while about 23 percent worked for the government. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the occupation is expected to grow by 18 percent nationwide by 2018.

During 2009, health educators in Dallas earned an average wage of $23.75 per hour, while those throughout Texas earned an average wage of $21.86 per hour and those across the country earned an average wage of $23.59 per hour.
