Medical equipment preparers clean, sterilize, install and prepare laboratory or healthcare equipment. They also may be responsible for performing routine laboratory tasks, such as operating and inspecting equipment.

Anyone embarking on a career as a medical equipment preparer should expect to find plenty of employment opportunities during the near future, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Employment in the Gulf Coast area, where Houston is located, is expected to increase from 650 workers during 2006 to 850 workers by 2016, accounting for 200 additional jobs and an overall growth rate of 30.80 percent.

Throughout Texas, employment of medical equipment preparers is anticipated to grow from 2,550 workers during 2006 to 3,250 workers by 2016, making for 700 additional jobs and an overall growth rate of 27.50 percent.

Employment across America should increase from 45,247 workers during 2006 to 51,655 workers by 2016, accounting for 6,400 additional jobs and an overall growth rate of 14.10 percent.

The top industries that employ medical equipment preparers include:

• General medical and surgical hospitals - 64.72 percent
• Specialty hospitals, except psychiatric and substance abuse - 10.48 percent
• Outpatient care centers - 7.60 percent
• Offices of dentists - 6.93 percent
• Colleges, universities and professional schools - 2.47 percent

Medical equipment preparers also can expect to be paid well. During 2009, the average wage for medical equipment preparers in the Gulf Coast area was $14.13 per hour, while the average wage in Texas was $13.29 per hour and the average wage throughout the nation was $14.32 per hour.
