The number of jobs Atlanta lost during the last decade places the city among the majority of markets that experienced employment declines.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Atlanta was among 53 markets that lost private-sector jobs during the last decade. The city lost a total of 77,000 jobs between May 2000 and May 2010, placing it 91st among the top 100 metro areas.

During May 2000, Atlanta had a workforce of 2,012,800 employees, but after hitting a high of 2,129,000 jobs during May 2007, the city went on to strike a low employment of 1,935,300 workers during May of this year. However, that was not even close to the worst employment decline in the nation.

Eight metro areas lost more than 100,000 private-sector jobs during the 10-year period, with Detroit experiencing the worst lost, as the city’s workforce declined by 498,300 employees between May 2000 and May 2010.

Other cities that saw six-figure employment declines include: Chicago by 365,400 jobs; Los Angeles by 323,500 jobs; San Francisco-Oakland by 250,500 jobs; New York City by 188,900 jobs; San Jose by 188,500 jobs; Cleveland by 139,700 jobs; and Boston by 119,600 jobs.

On the flip side, a total of 47 metro areas gained jobs between May 2000 and May 2010, but only two markets added more than 100,000 private-sector jobs. Houston’s workforce increased by 202,900 employees during the 10-year period, while Washington added 197,000 workers.

Among the biggest 100 metro areas in the country, 2008 served as the most common peak, with 38 markets seeing their highest employment totals for the decade during that year. The next best year was 2007, when 31 metro areas experienced their highest employment totals.

So far, 2010 has been the worst year of the decade for 43 of the top 100 metro areas in America.
