Marketing managers work to determine the demand for products and services offered by a firm and its competitors in order to identify potential customers. They are responsible for developing pricing strategies with the goal of maximizing the firm’s profits or share of the market.

At they same time, marketing managers ensure that the firm’s customers are satisfied. They also are responsible for overseeing product development and monitoring trends that indicate the need for new products and services.

A variety of educational backgrounds are suitable for a marketing manager positions. While a bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology business, advertising, philosophy or science is acceptable, many employers prefer to hire managers with a degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.

According to the Tennessee Career Information Delivery System, marketing managers in the state earn a median salary of $72,640 per year, while marketing managers throughout the nation earn a median salary of $104,400 per year.

As of 2008, advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations and sales managers held about 623,800 jobs throughout the country. Marketing managers accounted for about 175,600 of those positions, while sales managers accounted for 346,900, public relations managers accounted for 56,700, and advertising and promotions managers accounted for 44,600.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of these workers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations, with tough competition between applicants.

The industry as a whole is expected to increase by 13 percent from 2008 to 2018. Employment of marketing managers specifically should increase by 12 percent during that 10-year period, which is about as fast as the average growth rate expected for all occupations.
