As the area’s unemployment rate decreased, more jobs in Fort Lauderdale were added at the end of last year.

During December 2009, the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach area’s unemployment rate decreased from 10.2 percent to 10 percent, following an increase from 9.7 percent during November. The decrease places the area’s unemployment rate even with the national rate of 10 percent.

The Fort Lauderdale area had a total non-farm employment of 743,700 workers during December, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 740,100 workers during November, but a 2.5 percent decrease from December 2008.


Seven industries saw a monthly increase in employment, including: manufacturing by 100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities by 1,900 jobs; financial activities by 100 jobs; professional and business services by 500 jobs; education and health services by 800 jobs; leisure and hospitality by 500 jobs; and other services by 300 jobs. Employment in the government industry remained even over the month with 108,000 workers.

However, only two industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment. The professional and business services industry employed 121,800 workers during December, up from 121,300 workers during November and a .4 percent increase from December 2008. Employment in the government industry increased by .6 percent over the year.

The construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to the previous year. The industry employed 37,400 workers during December, down from 37,900 workers during November and an 18 percent decrease from December 2008.

Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:
manufacturing by 7.3 percent
trade, transportation and utilities by 1.6 percent
information by 5.2 percent
financial activities by 7.3 percent
education and health services by 1.6 percent
leisure and hospitality by .1 percent
other services by .9 percent
