Jobs in Raleigh NC See Monthly Increase
Although the unemployment rate increased and more employers shed workers over the year, some jobs in Raleigh NC were added during February.
During February, the Raleigh-Cary area’s unemployment rate increased from 9.5 percent to 9.6 percent, following an increase from 8.7 percent during January. The latest increase places the area’s rate just below the national average of 9.7 percent.
The Raleigh area had a total non-farm employment of 492,700 workers during February, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 490,000 workers during January, but a 1.7 percent decrease from last year.
Five industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including: mining, logging and construction by 200 jobs; professional and business services by 900 jobs; education and health services by 1,500 jobs; other services by 200 jobs; and government by 300 jobs.
Employment in the financial activities industry remained even over the month with 26,000 jobs, while employment in the leisure and hospitality industry remained even over the month and year with 48,600 jobs.
Three industries managed to see a yearly increase in employment, with the education and health services industry seeing the biggest gain. The industry employed 62,000 workers during February, up from 60,500 workers during January and a 2.1 percent increase from 2009.
The other services industry employed 25,000 workers during February, up from 24,800 workers during January and a 1.6 percent increase from last year, while the government industry employed 90,500 workers, up from 90,200 workers during January and a .1 percent increase from last year.
Even though it added jobs over the month, the mining, logging and construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. The industry employed, 27,300 workers during February, up from 27,100 workers during January, but a 12.2 percent decrease from last year.
Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:
- Manufacturing by 8.9 percent
- Trade, transportation and utilities by 1.7 percent
- Information by 1.8 percent
- Financial activities by 4.1 percent
- Professional and business services by .8 percent
