San Antonio, which is home to 1.4 million residents, is the second-largest city in the State of Texas and the seventh-largest city in the nation. San Antonio was the fourth-fastest growing city in the nation from 2000 to 2006 and the fifth-fastest growing city from 2007 to 2008.

The biggest and most important industries in San Antonio include: financial services, government, healthcare and tourism. The city is home to South Texas Medical Center, a conglomerate of various hospitals, clinics and research and higher education institutions.

San Antonio has one of the largest military concentrations in the country, with the city’s defense industry employing more than 89,000 workers and contributing $5.25 billion to the local economy. Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base and Brooks City-Base are located in the city, while Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley are located just outside San Antonio.

Each year about 20 million tourists visit San Antonio, making tourism one of the city’s largest industries. According to a recent Economic Impact Study from the San Antonio Area Tourism Council, the tourism industry employs about 94,000 workers each year and contributes more than $8.7 billion to the local economy.

San Antonio’s hotel and motel tax, sales taxes and other revenues from hospitality agreements create about $160 million in yearly revenue for the city and other government agencies.

As of late, San Antonio’s economy has managed to remain stable, despite the current economic recession. The city has maintain a relatively low unemployment rate and add jobs on a monthly basis, while only seeing a slight decrease in employment when compared to last year.

During October, San Antonio saw its unemployment rate decrease from 7.1 percent to 7 percent, following an increase from 7 percent during September. The city’s current rate is considerably lower than the national unemployment rate at the time of 10.2 percent.

San Antonio had a total non-farm employment of 848,100 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 847,000 workers during September and only a .7 percent decrease from last year.
