There are a plethora of places to look for jobs in Nashville Tennessee.

Nashville, which has 626,144 residents, has strong healthcare, music, publishing, banking and transportation industries. Tennessee is home to 23 Fortune 500 companies, with two of those located in Nashville, including Hospital Corporation of America and Vanguard Health Systems.

Healthcare is the largest industry in Nashville, which is home to more than 250 healthcare companies, including HCA, which is the largest private operator of hospitals in the world. The industry contributes about $18.3 billion per year and 94,000 jobs to the local economy.

Considered to be the “home of country music” and often dubbed “music city,” all of the Big Four record labels and several independent labels have offices in Nashville. The city has the second-largest music production center in the country, behind New York City, and the music industry contributes about $6.4 million per year and 19,000 jobs to the local economy.

The automotive industry has recently increased its presence in Nashville, with Nissan North America moving its corporate headquarters to the city in 2006. Religious organizations also are prominent in Nashville, with the United Methodist Church, Southern Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention and the National Association of Free Will Baptists all located in the city.

Unfortunately, the Nashville area’s economy has been suffering as a result of the current economic recession. Even though the unemployment rate has slightly declined, the area has continued to lose jobs on a monthly and yearly basis.

During October, the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area’s unemployment rate decreased from 9.2 percent to 9.1 percent, following a decrease from 9.7 percent during September. That decrease keeps the area’s current rate below the national unemployment rate at the time of 10.2 percent.

The area had a total non-farm employment of 727,500 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 728,300 workers during September and a 3.8 percent decrease from last year.
