Orlando Jobs Decline
Most job seekers have probably had a harder time finding Orlando jobs (Click here) lately.
During September, the Orlando-Kissimmee area saw its unemployment rate increase from 11.1 percent to 11.5 percent, after seeing no increase or decrease during August. The current rate was higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.8 percent.
The area had a total non-farm employment of 1,015,700 workers during September, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,017,700 workers during August and a 4.7 percent decrease from last year.
Four industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment during September, including professional and business services by 900 jobs, education and health services by 1,300 jobs, other services by 300 jobs and government by 900 jobs. The mining and logging industry remained flat at 300 jobs.
No industries saw an increase in employment when compared to last year. The mining and logging industry, however, kept an even employment level by not losing or adding any workers during the year.
Not surprisingly, the construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 57,200 workers during September, which is down from 59,700 workers during August and an 18.8 percent decrease from last year.
Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:
- manufacturing by 6.8 percent
- trade, transportation and utilities by 4.8 percent
- information by 3.1 percent
- financial activities by 4 percent
- professional and business services by 8.4 percent
- education and health services by .4 percent
- leisure and hospitality by 1.7 percent
- other services by 4.5 percent
- government by .3 percent
