Colorado Jobs Decline
Even though the state’s unemployment rate began to decline, more Colorado jobs (Click here) were lost last month.
During September, Colorado saw its unemployment rate decrease from 7.3 percent to 7 percent, which is lower than the national unemployment rate 9.8 percent. This follows the state’s unemployment rate decrease during August from 7.8 percent to 7.3 percent.
Colorado had a total non-farm employment of 2,238,300 workers during September, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,245,200 workers during August and a 4.9 percent decrease from last year.
Three industries saw an increase in monthly employment during September, including financial activities by 300 jobs, education and health services by 1,600 jobs and other services by 100 jobs. The information industry employed 72,200 workers, the same as during August.
Two industries managed to to add jobs on a yearly basis. The education and health services industry employed 259,500 workers during September, which is up from 257,900 workers during August and a 2.7 percent increase from last year. The government industry employed 391,300 workers during September, which is down from 391,500 workers during August, but a 1.3 percent increase from last year.
The mining and logging industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 22,300 workers during September, down from 23,100 workers during August and a 23.4 percent decrease from last year.
Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:
- construction by 15.9 percent
- manufacturing by 9.9 percent
- trade, transportation and utilities by 4.8 percent
- information by 6.2 percent
- financial activities by 5.6 percent
- professional and business services by 8.4 percent
- leisure and hospitality by 5.2 percent
- other services by 2.9 percent
