Nevada Jobs Decline

As the state’s unemployment rate continued to soar, more jobs in Nevada (Click here) were lost during August.

During that month, Nevada saw its unemployment rate increase from 12.5 percent to 13.2 percent, which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. The state’s unemployment rate has not declined since December 2005, when it went from 4.3 percent to 4.2 percent.

The state had a total non-farm employment of 1,182,100 workers during August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,187,200 workers during July and a 6.5 percent decrease from last year.

Several industries were able to add jobs on a month-to-month basis. The mining and logging industry added 100 jobs, the financial activities industry added 200 jobs, the other services industry added 100 jobs and the government industry added 1,000 jobs.  The manufacturing industry employed 44,800 workers, the same as during July.

Only two industries managed to add jobs when compared to last year. The mining and logging industry employed 12,400 workers during August, a .8 percent increase from last year, while the education and health services industry employed 97,500 workers, a 1.5 pecent increase from last year.

The construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 86,800 workers during August, down from 88,900 workers during July and a 25.4 percent decrease from last year.

Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in jobs include:

  • manufacturing by 7.1 percent
  • trade, transportation and utilities by 3.9 percent
  • information by 5.4 percent
  • financial activities by 5.1 percent
  • professional and business services by 6.6 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by 7.3 percent
  • other services by 1.3 percent
  • government by 2.2 percent
