Colorado Jobs Decline

Even though the state’s unemployment rate began to decline, more Colorado jobs (Click here) were lost last month.

During September, Colorado saw its unemployment rate decrease from 7.3 percent to 7 percent, which is lower than the national unemployment rate 9.8 percent. This follows the state’s unemployment rate decrease during August from 7.8 percent to 7.3 percent.

Colorado had a total non-farm employment of 2,238,300 workers during September, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,245,200 workers during August and a 4.9 percent decrease from last year.

Employee Background Checks Identify Thousands of Utah Teachers

Up to 50 people with Utah jobs as public school teachers were recently found to have criminal violations after undergoing employee background checks.

According to an article by The Salt Lake Tribune, all of the state’s 20,000 licensed teachers were recently required to undergo criminal history checks as part of an effort to improve the system for performing background checks on school employees.

The names released by public safety officials came from a new computer data bank of 112,000 school employee names and birth dates that were cross referenced against Utah arrests dating back to the 1960s.

Atlanta Education Jobs Supported by Stimulus

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has created or retained thousands of Atlanta education jobs and nearly 10,000 education-related positions throughout the State of Georgia.

The state recently released a report detailing exactly how it has spent the federal stimulus funding it received. During Q1 of the ARRA, Georgia spent $701,567,169 and created or preserved a total of 23,879 jobs. The state has been awarded a total of $3,281,223,879.

At the beginning of the year, the White House predicted that stimulus spending would create a total of 3.6 million jobs throughout the country, with 106,000 of those jobs being created in Georgia. During September, it was estimated that so far about 1 million jobs had been created or preserved.

Jobs in Denver Rank High

Those with jobs in Denver have received some good news.

Forbes recently ranked Colorado fourth in its 2009 “Best States for Business” list. The list was based on each state’s regulatory environment, business costs, labor supply, quality of life, economic climate and growth potential. Colorado received rankings in the top 20 for five of the six criteria, including labor supply and growth.

“As companies are looking at their expansion plans, they’re looking for areas that have a very friendly business climate, quality labor, good quality of life, all of the things that we have here in Denver,” Patty Silverstein, chief economist with the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, told 9NEWS.

Nevada Jobs Decline

As the state’s unemployment rate continued to soar, more jobs in Nevada (Click here) were lost during August.

During that month, Nevada saw its unemployment rate increase from 12.5 percent to 13.2 percent, which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. The state’s unemployment rate has not declined since December 2005, when it went from 4.3 percent to 4.2 percent.

The state had a total non-farm employment of 1,182,100 workers during August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,187,200 workers during July and a 6.5 percent decrease from last year.
