Rhode Island Jobs with DLT

One department that helps the unemployed is creating some Rhode Island jobs of its own.

The state Department of Labor and Training recently announced that it plans to hire 19 new workers at its netWORKri One-Stop Career Centers. Salaries for the new positions will range from $35,438 for a senior employment and training interviewer to $39,838 for a business service specialist.

The limited-period positions, which are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will last at least through October 2010, will help the department provide a variety of workforce development services to job seekers and employers.

The new workers will increase staffing at One-Stop Career Centers by about 50 percent, which is an important addition during a time of increased use. During 2008, 30,173 people visited a netWORKri facility.

“Adding jobs in the One-Stop Career Centers allows us to expand the number of staff at a time when job seekers can use additional assistance in connecting to training opportunities and finding employment,” Sandra M. Powell, director of the Department of Labor and Training, said.

These are the first positions created at the DLT by the federal stimulus package. However, other federal funds have paid for new employees at the unemployment insurance service center.

Federal funds also have helped about 900 young people find jobs this summer, added $25 per week to unemployment checks and bailed out the state’s unemployment trust fund.

Hopefully these new workers will help Rhode Island’s current economic situation. The state has an unemployment rate of 12.1 percent, the third-highest in the country, and there are now 68,500 unemployed Rhode Islanders.

The centers teach interviewing and computer skills, as well as provide space for job seekers to meet recruiters and look through employment ads. Job seekers have access to computer terminals, public phones and fax machines to contact potential employers.
