Perth Jobs

As many as 400,000 new Perth jobs may be available over the course of the next decade.

The area has recently experienced a substantial population boom with no end in site. Already the demand for housing, public transport and medical and educational services is beginning to impact the city. As a result, many new jobs will have to be created in order to continue to meet the needs of new residents.

A recently-released study by a leading demographer stated that the growth of the population will most likely exceed the level expected by the state government. Because of this, the report advised officials to begin looking into the future and creating new positions that will serve the expanding city.

According to Monash University Demographer Bob Birrell, if this predication is ignored then Perth could potentially see traffic problems, a healthcare crisis resulting from a lack in the number of medical professionals needed to meet demands and residents will struggle to find affordable housing.

Already Birrell says that approximately 950 people move to Western Australia every week. He went on to say that by 2021 there will most likely be 2.1 million people living in Perth, which is a population increase of 43 percent. This means that 640,000 new residents are expected in the next 13 years. If the city does continue to swell at this pace then it will achieve the fastest rate of growth in the history of any Australian city. Birrell believes that things could be happening too rapidly for Perth.

“It would seem to me that the logical thing to dowould be to slow the pace of growth down,” he said, adding that the population explosion is a result of the mineral boom, which he believes needs to be decelerated.

He went on to say that “those resources will still be in the ground in 20 years time, they’ll probably be worth even more.” Because of this, Birrell feels that the city would have little to lose and would avoid may of the problems associated with trying to create new housing and fill job vacancies.

Alannah MacTiernan, the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, believes that a 27 percent rise in the population by 2021 is more likely to happen than what Birrell believes will occur. She says that, “Either way Perth is going to get much bigger and we have to be prepared to have a more diverse city if we’re going to be able to deal with it.”
