East Coast Food Distributor Saves Time, Space and Money with New ATS Implementation

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

nowHIRE.com announced it has successfully implemented its Elite Business Edition applicant tracking system for City Line Distributors. With the implementation of nowHIRE’s ATS, City Line has fully automated the hiring and onboarding process.

City Line has saved thousands of dollars annually in hard and soft costs since implementation of the nowHIRE system. Founded in 1930, City Line is New England’s number one independent full-service food distributor. The company processes approximately 2,500 employment applications per year.

Prior to nowHIRE, City Line used a paper-based application process. Each applicant provided differing information, which made the process inconsistent. Additionally, storing paper applications and resumes created a space problem. nowHIRE’s ATS streamlines and standardizes the hiring process by allowing applicants to complete an application online or through the use of a kiosk set up in City Line’s lobby.

“nowHIRE has made the hiring process more efficient and the system ensures all the necessary information is collected,” said Erica Blackmon, City Line’s recruiter. “Now I can recall applications at the click of a button and search for applicants in the database without having to camp out at a file cabinet.”

700 Jobs Created in Boston

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced that the Boston Housing Authority was recently awarded $33 million of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funding has been appropriated for various projects across the city and will create nearly 700 Boston jobs starting with the redevelopment of the Washington Beech housing complex slated to begin at the end of March. Washington Beech represents one of the very first projects to start in the entire country due to ARRA funding.

“To be one of the first major cities in the country to actively utilize funding from ARRA on projects that will create almost 700 jobs is a major accomplishment,” Mayor Menino said. “We want President Obama to know that Boston is in prime position to help the country’s economic recovery by creating jobs immediately. Washington Beech is just the beginning; projects across the city are set to go.”

ARRA represents the federal government’s most sweeping economic package in decades and much of the funding is directed toward priorities that Mayor Menino has long championed, including modernizing public housing, investing in neighborhood development, supporting youth opportunities in education and summer jobs, strengthening public safety, and advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives.

“The projects and programs that will be implemented by ARRA funding will create jobs, jumpstart our economy and help achieve the goals of the President’s Recovery plan,” said Jake Sullivan, Mayor Menino’s Federal Relations Officer and director of the City’s Economic Recovery Team. “These investments are at the heart of the priorities about which the Mayor has been so passionate throughout his time in office.”

Atlanta Jobs Likely Affected By Delta Layoffs

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson and President Edward H. Bastian issued a memo to the companies 70,000 employees worldwide responding to the worsening global economy. Layoffs are expected, but not word on how many Atlanta job cuts will be made. The memo read in part:

The worsening global economy continues to place additional pressure on the airline industry. In just the few months since we last announced capacity reductions, revenues have weakened, particularly in international markets. Once again, we must move quickly to adjust our capacity and stay in front of demand changes.

We remain focused on our goal to build a diversified, profitable worldwide network. To this end, even as we reduce our Atlantic and Pacific capacity, our Latin America capacity will be up slightly in the fourth quarter, as we take advantage of targeted growth opportunities through new routes and increased frequencies.

These reductions are in addition to the December announcement to reduce systemwide 2009 capacity by 6 - 8% year over year. As a result of the voluntary programs just concluded, nearly 2,100 of our colleagues will be voluntarily leaving over then next several months. While these voluntary reductions met our overall target, there are certain positions and geographic locations where we fell short of achieving the goals of the voluntary programs. With the additional capacity reductions noted above, we again must reassess our staffing needs. As in the past, voluntary programs are always our first consideration to adjust staffing needs.
