Atlanta Jobs with Cox to be Cut
One large communications company will soon be cutting more Atlanta jobs.
Cox Communications, which is based in the Atlanta area, has announced its plan to cut 460 jobs, or 2 percent of its workforce. According to an article by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the cuts will be achieved through retirement, attrition and layoffs. The company has not yet announced what positions will be cut.
“There could be a small number of involuntary actions, but things have not happened yet, and we are very early in the process,” Spokesman David Grabert said in the article.
The company currently employs about 23,000 employees, and the cuts are intended to increase efficiency. Cox Communications’ jobs in Atlanta total about 2,000, and it is unknown how many jobs in Atlanta will be cut.
“Essentially we are operating our business to position for future growth,” Grabert added. “It will be 2 percent companywide. But you can’t take 2 percent and apply it, and say that in Atlanta you get ‘X.’”
In 2007, Cox Communications brought in $8.3 billion in revenue and currently has more than 6.2 million residential and commercial customers. Cox is the country’s third-largest cable company, offering cable television, high-speed Internet access and phone service. The company also recently announced its plans to begin offering wireless phone service next year.
Cox Communications is part of Cox Enterprises, which also owns the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
